A Day at the Races – June 2013

A Day at the Races for South Liverpool Circle-8th June 2013

Bro Charles Boulton writes:

Led by Brother President Jim Reid and his Wife Pam, twenty four Brothers, wives and friends had a wonderful day at the Races at Chester.

Having been sustained by a leisurely picnic on our arrival and fortified by suitable liquid refreshment, it was with some trepidation that the first bets were placed either with the on course bookmakers or at the Tote or at  various betting  shops scattered about the Course. Initial successes emboldened some whilst other carried on to retrieve initial losses. Some tried yankee bets, others eschewed each way wagers as being too faint-hearted, some bewailed their losses and other were a little too reticent, about their success, perhaps taking too seriously the gentle hints that the winners had to buy everyone a drink on the way home!

We all departed after the last race at 5.40- some of us a tad richer, others a tad poorer, but all sun–drenched and ready for  a welcome meal at a Toby Inn in nearby Hoole Village. As all but two of our number foregathered outside the Restaurant we mused whether the missing pair had been more successful than ourselves and repaired to the Grosvenor Hotel! Their sudden appearance dispelled these thoughts and we all proceeded to enjoy various meals at no great cost  in convivial company.

Many thanks to Bro President Jim and Pam for organising a wonderful day out.
